Every year on July 26th, India commemorates Kargil Vijay Diwas to honour its soldiers' bravery and sacrifice during the Kargil War of 1999. This historic day commemorates India's roaring triumph over infiltrating Pakistani soldiers in the high-altitude Kargil region of Jammu and Kashmir.
Here are some fascinating facts about Kargil Vijay Diwas that highlight the courage and resilience of our armed forces and instil faith in the undying spirit of patriotism in every Indian:
The Kargil War was fought between May and July 1999 and was caused by the infiltration of Pakistani soldiers and militants into Indian territory across the Line of Control (LoC).
Kargil, located in the state of Jammu and Kashmir, holds strategic importance due to its proximity to the Line of Control and the crucial Leh-Srinagar highway.
The Indian military launched "Operation Vijay" to recapture the high-altitude posts that Pakistani forces had occupied. It incorporated a blend of ground operations, air strikes, and artillery strategisation.
The conflict took place in treacherous mountainous terrain at altitudes exceeding 18,000 feet, where soldiers faced extreme weather conditions including freezing temperatures and lack of oxygen.
Several soldiers displayed exemplary valour during the war and 11 Maha Vir Chakras were awarded. Captain Vikram Batra and Lieutenant Manoj Kumar Pandey (posthumously), Rifleman Sanjay Kumar and Grenadier Yogendra Singh Yadav were awarded the Param Vir Chakras for their heroic role in the war.
Their heroic actions and sacrifices became symbolic of the courage displayed by Indian forces in reclaiming the strategic peaks from Pakistani intruders. Captain Vikram Batra, is fondly remembered for his famous slogan "Yeh dil maange more!" (This heart wants more!)
The Kargil War profoundly impacted our Indian military strategy and doctrine. It led to substantial reforms and improvements in intelligence gathering, surveillance capabilities, and operational preparedness in high-altitude terrains for efficient risk management.

The President of India and other dignitaries pay their respects at the Amar Jawan Jyoti, India Gate, New Delhi. It serves as a solemn reminder of the bravery and selflessness of our armed forces.
The Kargil War garnered international attention due to its strategic implications and the intense fighting that ensued between the two nuclear-armed neighbours.
Despite the conflict, efforts for peace and diplomatic relations between India and Pakistan have continued, underscoring the importance of dialogue and resolution of disputes through peaceful means.
The Indian Air Force (IAF) played a crucial role in the Kargil War by conducting precision airstrikes to target enemy positions on the mountain peaks. This marked a significant shift in modern warfare tactics, showcasing the integration of air power with ground operations in mountainous terrain.
As we commemorate the significant day- Kargil Vijay Diwas each year, let us be proudly reminded of the bravery with which each soldier fought to preserve the honour of our nation, the families that sacrificed their sons, brothers and husbands to ensure that we continue living fearlessly and freely.
