The International Baccalaureate (IB) board offers the IB Diploma Programme and the IB Career-related Programme (IBCP) to students at pre-university levels. IBCP students take at least two IBDP subjects among other career-related subjects, however, eligibility criteria for IIT programmes require students to study a full-time two-year programme, which criteria IBCP does not meet. In IBDP, students can choose the foundational subjects, Physics, Chemistry, Biology and Mathematics on which the JEE and NEET tests are based. IB students are eligible to apply to the Engineering and Medical Science programmes in India. Their ability to crack the competitive entrance exams for these courses is dependent on how strong their fundamentals are and the preparation they have put in.
To appear for JEE and NEET, the student must -
CBSE syllabus for Science subjects is more vast than IB and the course is more theory-driven. However, IB students acquire competencies in their programme that help them navigate through the JEE and NEET syllabus and do well in these entrance tests. Since the students learn to apply the theories and concepts, they can approach the JEE and NEET syllabus with a logical approach. Furthermore, the IB students cultivate great discipline, time management and organisational skills through their programme. Thus, they can allot adequate time for JEE and NEET preparations and practice regularly for the same. There are ample resources online and multiple textbooks and academic papers that students can research and study from because they have strong academic research skills. Furthermore, their IB curriculum makes them adept at using online portals for search. It also makes them skilled at preparing coherent notes and self-study.
IB curriculum is known for its rigour, however, with proper planning and diligence the student can manage it comfortably. Furthermore, with IB international schools offering on-premise coaching and guidance for NEET and JEE, students have scheduled periods for covering the academic portion of these tests. Also, while preparing with a peer group, students will have other driven individuals who can help each other in the learning process. Ideally, it is recommended that one starts preparing for JEE and NEET when they are in the first year of IBDP so that they can cover all the syllabus and have appeared for ample practice tests. Students who started in the vacations after 11th grade or in the beginning of 12th grade have also done well in clearing these tests.
That is not necessarily true. CBSE has its strengths, especially for students who want to take the Science stream. However, IBDP students have a better advantage with the course’s interdisciplinary curriculum that gives them the opportunity to study non-science subjects and have practical experiences. The experiential learning methodologies of IB prepare students to prepare them for college education too. IIT programmes are now integrating some Humanities subjects in their technical programmes to help students gain an interdisciplinary understanding of their technical course. The explorative essays in which students conduct academic research, quote academic references and research notable academic papers and books prepare them for writing a thesis and presenting case studies. Whether the student is aiming at a future in academic research, entrepreneurship or management positions, they learn skills that will help them ease into any field they pursue.
IBDP gives students an international perspective and through the various activities and course requirements, students’ communication skills and resourcefulness improve. Thus, they can get the best advantage of the education.
