Visual Art and Psychology Learners Explore the Timeless Craftsmanship of Somanathapura

Learners from the Visual Arts and Psychology departments set out on an educational field visit to the Keshava Temple at Somanathapura, a renowned example of Hoysala architecture. Built in the 13th century under the reign of King Narasimha III, this temple is a marvel of stone craftsmanship, constructed without the use of mortar or adhesives. Instead, they used an interlocking system where intricately carved stones were pieced together to create its enduring structure.

Upon arrival, the learners received a guided tour, during which they explored the rich history and architectural significance of the temple. Following the tour, learners had the opportunity to photograph the temple, capturing its unique design and considering the artistic and technical skills of the artisans from that era.

After a break, the visual arts learners gathered to sketch and paint elements of the temple that caught their attention, while psychology learners engaged in interdisciplinary learning. They analysed the historical context and human behaviour associated with temple construction and art, connecting cultural creativity with psychological theories.

The day was both enjoyable and intellectually enriching, allowing the learners to deepen their understanding of history, art, and psychology through hands-on learning.
