Britannia Factory Visit with DP1 and DP2 Learners

15 November 2024

Our DP1 and DP2 learners recently participated in a field visit to the Britannia factory, aimed at enhancing their practical understanding of chemical processes within an industrial setting. The visit offered a hands-on opportunity to bridge theoretical knowledge with real-world applications. Upon arrival, the Britannia team briefed learners on essential safety protocols. This was followed by a 20-minute introductory session that acquainted learners with the Britannia brand, its historical background, and an overview of key manufacturing processes.

During the factory tour, learners were guided through each stage of Britannia’s production line, covering the journey from raw material handling to packaging and dispatch. They observed the management of essential ingredients such as flour, sugar, and oils, and were introduced to the intricate mixing process, where various ingredients interact through specific chemical reactions. The importance of temperature control in baking was also explained, emphasising the chemical changes that contribute to product quality. As the tour continued, learners gained insights into the role of packaging, quality control, and logistics, all of which are vital in maintaining product freshness and ensuring smooth distribution. A highlight of the visit was when Britannia offered learners freshly baked biscuits and chips, showcasing their product range and allowing learners to experience the end result of the manufacturing process. After the factory tour, learners and faculty enjoyed lunch together adding a pleasant conclusion to the day.
