Understanding Mathematics Analysis and Approaches (AA), and Application and Interpretation (AI) in IBDP

Mathematics may have been a subject of collective fear or dislike for students along the decades and contemporary education is trying to break that typecast. The IBDP especially ensures to acknowledge this rampant confusion regarding the subject by offering different levels to learners based on their interest and level of proficiency.

There are two IBDP mathematics courses, Mathematics Application and Interpretation (AI) and Mathematics Analysis and Approaches (AA). They are both given at a higher level and standard level and each subject (AA and AI) is designed to meet the needs of students who wish to use mathematics in a variety of academic and professional settings. You, as a learner exploring mathematics as a subject in the IBDP, must assess your interest and passion for mathematics, as well as your options for higher education and the courses you need to take. These two courses cover the same five core topics: number and algebra, functions, geometry and trigonometry, calculus, statistics and probability.

The course Mathematics Analysis and Approaches (AA) concentrates on pure mathematics, helping students gain a thorough grasp of mathematical ideas and how they are used. The course requires a solid understanding of mathematics as well as a desire to delve deeply into mathematical ideas. Theorems and proofs that lead to specific knowledge and its application in the real world and other fields of knowledge are anticipated to be understood by learners. In Analysis and Approaches, complex numbers, vectors, calculus, and trigonometry are all covered in great depth. It offers evaluations that are both calculator- and non-calculator-based. In general, AA is the best option if you want to delve into the world of practical abstract theories and are enthusiastic about learning different theorems and proofs to generalize.

The field of mathematics application and interpretation (AI) is concerned with using mathematics in practical settings. Theorems and proofs are not required of learners, but they do need to apply mathematical ideas to a variety of situations. It leans more toward modeling, finance mathematics, statistics, and probability. All five sections are approached differently; rather than focusing on knowledge, this approach focuses on applying mathematical facts and proofs to data analysis and problem-solving. The course strongly encourages the use of technology, with all assessment components centered on calculators.

For students eager in pursuing higher education in the fields of mathematics, physics, chemistry, engineering, and economics, AA HL is advised.

Students interested in management studies, computer science, economics, biology, medicine, or design technology are advised to take AI HL.

For students who are weak in mathematics but are interested in majoring in anything other than pure sciences and engineering, AA SL is advised.

For students interested in continuing higher education in fields such as law, journalism, theater, management studies, etc. where mathematics is not a primary requirement, AI SL is advised.

The blog is an attempt to spread awareness regarding the flexibility of choice that IBDP students experience when they enroll in this diverse curriculum. It is to share with you that mathematics can be approachable and can be utilised to the minimum if it does not suit your academic aspirations. Either way, the IBDP enables students to choose subjects and combinations that excite and motivate them instead of compelling them to learn something that doesn’t raise their cognitive curiosity.
