Open-mindedness as a part of IB learning

IB students are characterized by their open-mindedness since they appreciate the cultures and personal histories of other individuals, and therefore they are open to the values, perspectives, and traditions of other groups and communities.

Advantages of being open-minded

Students with open-mindedness can respect and embrace different perspectives. They can listen to one another and consider their approach before making a decision. They can broaden their thinking by learning about new ideas and experiences. Open-mindedness can advance mutual understanding among students.

A plurality of thinking and open-mindedness on campus fosters a broader range of ideas from a variety of viewpoints. Understanding the reasoning behind opposing arguments can help students to effectively controvert them. Communication of differences of opinion can be more effective if students who are otherwise hesitant to voice their opinions do so in an open-minded setting.

When students interact openly during college, they are prepared to have more constructive conversations in the future. They can use open-mindedness to advance mutual understanding, which achieves the ideal of working constructively and cohesively toward achieving their common goals, despite intense or initial disagreement. They can better appreciate the intellectual value and democratic significance of political tolerance in the future by listening to all sides of various issues.

Cosmopolitanism: encouraging open-mindedness can provide students with lessons on the importance of tolerance in the future. Assuring that students are exposed to opinions on all sides of the issues that they will deal with every day can help them gain a deeper understanding of the importance of political respect.

Engaging students with a broad range of perspectives on pressing issues can better prepare them to be informed critical thinkers and problem solvers in various fields of human endeavour. Students are more likely to open up to trying out new things and go after their interests.

Faculty should feel free to express their view but should be mindful of the influence these views can have on students' thinking and understanding. They must inculcate an active desire to listen to more views than one; to evaluate facts from any angle. This is especially true in political science subjects.

This approach should be considered by all students and teachers since it is one that aims to elicit insight and wisdom from any perspective from which we may learn about how to make a positive influence on the lives of others. Listen to and discuss the pros and cons of this approach.

IB students excel at both academic study and involvement in local and wider communities because they are well-versed in different cultures and worldviews.

Parents’ role in developing your child's understanding:

  • Ensure your child develops respect and kindness towards all living things. Expose him or her to a variety of cultural experiences.
  • Visit and explore the Children's Museum to see how other cultures live.
  • Watch movies or plays from around the world with your child.
  • Become familiar with how other cultures celebrate holidays and try foods from other countries.
  • Inculcate an active desire to listen to more than one point of view; weigh the facts from every possible perspective; recognize alternative possibilities.
