Origin of the Conflict

The Kargil War was fought between May and July 1999 and was caused by the infiltration of Pakistani soldiers and militants into Indian territory across the Line of Control (LoC).

Strategic Location

Kargil, located in the state of Jammu and Kashmir, holds strategic importance due to its proximity to the Line of Control and the crucial Leh-Srinagar highway.

Operation Vijay

The Indian military launched "Operation Vijay" to recapture the high-altitude posts that Pakistani forces had occupied. It incorporated a blend of ground operations, air strikes, and artillery strategisation.

Extreme Conditions

The conflict took place in treacherous mountainous terrain at altitudes exceeding 18,000 feet, where soldiers faced extreme weather conditions including freezing temperatures and lack of oxygen.

Bravery Recognised

Kargil Vijay Diwas

Several soldiers displayed exemplary valour during the war and 11 Maha Vir Chakras were awarded. Captain Vikram Batra and Lieutenant Manoj Kumar Pandey (posthumously), Rifleman Sanjay Kumar and Grenadier Yogendra Singh Yadav were awarded the Param Vir Chakras for their heroic role in the war.

Their heroic actions and sacrifices became symbolic of the courage displayed by Indian forces in reclaiming the strategic peaks from Pakistani intruders. Captain Vikram Batra, is fondly remembered for his famous slogan "Yeh dil maange more!" (This heart wants more!)

Kargil Vijay Diwas is honoured throughout India, on the 26th of July with honours offered to the martyrs who gave their lives for the country. The President of India and other dignitaries pay their respects at the Amar Jawan Jyoti, India Gate, New Delhi. It serves as a solemn reminder of the bravery and selflessness of our armed forces.

The Kargil War garnered international attention due to its strategic implications and the intense fighting that ensued between the two nuclear-armed neighbours.
