Adolescent Stress: Helping Students with the Active Wellness Programme

Just like adults, teenagers also face stressful situations on a daily basis. More often than not, they experience stress when they perceive a painful or challenging situation and believe that they don’t have the resources to cope with it. Demanding school schedules, changes in the body, problems with peers, moving schools, etc, are some common sources of stress for teenagers.

Depending on the nature of the stressor, teenagers can have different responses. Generally, when someone is stressed, their body responds by making hormones that give them extra focus, strength or energy. While t small surges boost their positivity and help improve their performance, chronic stress can keep them from doing their best.

It is impossible to avoid stress but manageable with patience and practice. It is seen that teenagers who develop stress management skills feel less helpless in stressful situations and respond to them better. Here are a few things that can make it easier to manage everyday stress for students of the Knowledgeum Academy:

Planning the Day

Students who experience stress because of their packed schedule should use a calendar or a planner to keep track of it. Fill in the time for your classes, tests and due dates for assignments to avoid procrastination, a leading cause of stress in teenagers. It would also be beneficial to allot time slots for other activities and things that you enjoy.

Sticking to the Plan

Making a plan and then not following it won’t do any good, so it is important to follow the timetable. Make sure to stay on schedule. Checking off things from the list that you’ve done can give a sense of accomplishment and reduce stress. Maintaining a fixed routine of studying, assignments and playtime will help reduce stress.

Asking for Help

Managing schoolwork, tests and grades can all be very overwhelming for a student. One way to limit stress is by asking for help when needed. Your parents, teachers or coach can guide you and help you get things done. You can also ask for help from your peers as you study together and discuss your doubts.

Getting Enough Sleep

After a long day of activity, sleep is essential for physical and emotional well-being. While it is normal to sometimes want to stay up late to watch a favourite movie or talk to a friend, then you wouldn’t have enough hours to sleep because you have to wake up the next day for school. Without a good night’s sleep, you will be more lethargic and moody during the day.

Relying on Yoga and Meditation

Taking a few deep breaths in a moment of stress can be very helpful but by incorporating yoga and meditation into your daily life, a long-term solution can be achieved. Meditation helps clear out your mind and gives you a fresh perspective to look at a stressful situation.

Express Yourself

Research has shown that expressing yourself on paper can reduce your stress significantly. In fact, people suffering from anxiety and depression are often told to write down things that they are grateful for. This reduces stress and makes you feel positive about yourself.

Excessive stress in teenagers can drain their energy and make them feel cranky or annoyed. Such situations will make it harder for them to get things done. However, students at the Knowledgeum Academy learn to manage stress in a healthy way with their active wellness programmes. The programme helps them manage their stress better and also prepares them for future challenges that await them in life.
